CHAPTER 29

SLEIPNIR GALLOPED DOWN the road, moving faster and faster. Little Rob whooped with joy.

“Whoa, this is awesome!” shouted Robin from behind.

I closed my arms around Rob and told him to look at the Northern Lights. We lifted off, and the three of us howled with excitement. We sounded like a pack of wolves for a moment, and I thought of Ivan, Thomas, and Ed and the crazy things we used to do. It felt like years ago, not merely weeks. How suddenly everything had changed.

As we ascended, an odd calm came over me. I heard the shrill howls and they were coming from parts of me, but nevertheless I only observed them, detached from my selves and the world around me, which was fading away. All I could feel was a numbness at the loss of my friends and the responsibilities of saving nine worlds while protecting my inner child and this outer part of me. Robin howled close to my right ear, pulling me out of my head. I had to stay focused.

I scanned the sky for anything unusual or ominous, such as a falcon. I saw the top of Rob’s helmet, Sleipnir’s long white neck and head, his mane fluttering in the wind, and the lights high above us.

In my mind I prayed for safe passage. Strangely, it occurred to me that I hadn’t prayed to the All-Father. I was struck by the notion of doubting his abilities. None of the gods thought they could alter fate, and wasn’t it up to my grandpa to instill confidence in his subordinates? He was their leader.

Suddenly something struck me in the back of the head. I saw stars. Robin! She’d attacked me! But then I heard her scream. I twisted to look over my shoulder and saw that a falcon—no, a huge eagle—had lodged its talons into Robin’s shoulders. Screaming, she flailed her arms. The eagle pulled her toward the tail end. Eight-legged Sleipnir’s back was long, but there was not much left of it to support Robin. I quickly scooted after her, swung a leg over Little Rob, and did a 180 on the horse’s back.

“Let her go!”

The eagle stared at me for a second, its massive wings pumping air at my face. It had to be Ivan, that shape-shifting bastard.

Robin threw an uppercut to the bird’s gut. It dropped her. She fell onto her stomach. The eagle attacked again, lifting her by the back of her jacket.

I needed a gun but I didn’t have one.

Stop thinking like a human! You’re a god, for Christ’s sake. Create one!

Great idea, proper payback for what Ivan had done to me at the carnival. I held out my hand and visualized a gun in it. “Give me a gun!”

An object appeared in my hand. It was a rock the size of a snowball. A rock! But it was better than nothing. I had to roll with it. I palmed the rock, cocked my arm, and let it fly. The rock hit the eagle’s right wing and bounced off of its body.
